Driving In Tenerife - Some useful tips - By Comparecarhire.co.uk
The beautiful Spanish island of Tenerife lies just off the north-west coast of Africa, and is the largest, and perhaps
most delightful, of the Canary Islands. Due to its global location and volcanic origins, Tenerife is home to a diverse
yet breath-taking landscape; whilst the north of the island is dense with lush forests, the south is very dry and
filled with sandy beaches.Tenerife is also the proud home to spectacular Mount Teide, which, at 12,200 feet, is the
highest point in Spain. Aside from the stunning scenery however, Tenerife also boasts consistently sunny weather and
hardly any rainfall, making it no surprise that the island is a hugely popular tourist destination.
Many of the visitors to Tenerife choose to explore the island by hiring a car, and there are a number of popular driving routes. The island`s main road system operates as a ring travelling alongside the coast, and by simply following this you are guaranteed spectacular sea-views. There is certainly more to the island than its costal regions, however, and many tourists in both the north and south of the island drive inland to take a look at the quaint little mountain villages and ancient valleys. One such possible route begins in southern resort of Playa de las Americas, and follows the C822 towards Arona, climbing into cool pine forests with views back along the coast. Upon reaching Boca del Tauce the route crosses into Teide national park, offering drivers and their passengers the exciting opportunity to see a huge crater filled with lava fields. From here one can continue east to el Portillo and on to the C824, running along the island`s mountainous centre, and then head towards Guimar, where there are ancient step pyramids to be explored. Playa de las Americas is then a short drive home along the autopista (motorway).
Most of the visitors who wish to hire a car do so through one of the six car rental companies located in car hire at Tenerife airport. There is a great array of cars available for rental, though different companies do offer a different selection of cars, and this should be considered when choosing a rental firm. Some companies now even offer `exotic car rentals`, meaning you can ensure your holiday is even more memorable by cruising the island in the car of your dreams! Similarly rental companies have their own individual policies regarding the length of car rental, and while some follow rigid guidelines, others a much more flexible. To hire a car in Tenerife the driver must be a minimum of 21 and hold a standard valid driving license. Driving on the island isn`t too challenging as the rules of the road are generally very similar to those in the UK, however it is important to remember that cars are driven on the right side of the road rather than the left, so roundabouts are anticlockwise!
